Cracked benchtop: repair or replace?

The decision depends on stability, location and the result you need. Filling a line does not automatically resolve why it formed.

Detail of work along an installed stone joint

Map the crack

Photograph both endpoints and any branching. Show nearby openings, joins and the cabinet layout. A short stable line away from a critical area is not assessed like a long crack running through a narrow sink rail or unsupported projection.

Consider the supporting installation

Movement, poor support or an impact can change the recommendation. Additional support, cabinet adjustment or replacement may be necessary. Ask what the quote does and does not address so a cosmetic fill is not mistaken for structural certification.

Accept the appearance limit

A resin-filled crack remains visible. If your goal is an uninterrupted surface, discuss replacement rather than expecting an invisible repair. Keep damaged stone unloaded while advice is being sought.

A practical decision sequence

First establish whether the area is stable enough for a repair to be considered. Next discuss what support or other work is required. Only then compare the cosmetic result and cost with replacement. Reversing that order can lead to paying for a visible fill while the installation still has an unresolved problem. Do not test stability by pushing down on the cracked section.

Compare the whole cost

A repair price may exclude additional support. A replacement price may exclude disconnection, removal or matching adjacent sections. Ask for those differences in writing and compare the complete scope. If the crack continues to grow, update the team with new photos before a previously discussed repair is booked.

Questions, answered.
