Stone sealer versus protection film

A penetrating sealer and a surface film are different systems. Choose by the stone, existing finish and the problem you want to address.

What you want to protect against

Explain whether your concern is absorption, etching, scratches or maintaining a previously treated finish. A sealer is not an acid-proof coating. Film sits over the surface and has its own appearance, care and installation details.

Assess the existing condition

Both options need the surface considered first. Chips, cracks, residues and unsuitable coatings are separate concerns. List earlier treatments and provide photos of edges, joins and fittings before selecting a product.

Compare the complete scope

Ask about preparation, coverage boundaries, finish, ongoing maintenance and product limitations. Do not compare only a price per metre if the quoted systems and included work differ. A written scope should describe what you will receive.

A practical comparison

For a porous natural stone surface, absorption may be the main maintenance question. For a surface where finish protection is the goal, a film assessment may be relevant. Neither choice can be made solely from the stone colour or a generic kitchen photograph. Include the material, current finish, use and existing treatment history so the advice addresses your concern.

Questions for the quotation

Ask what preparation is included, how the appearance may change, where coverage stops and how the surface should be cleaned. Clarify future maintenance and any exclusions in the product terms. If repairs are needed first, have those identified separately so the protection proposal is based on a suitable prepared surface.
