Uneven stone benchtop joints: repair options

A join with a height difference needs more than a colour match. Show the alignment, adjoining stone and support before discussing repair.

Describe the height difference

Take photographs across the seam from a low angle as well as directly above it. Show which side sits higher and the length of the affected connection. Tell us if the join has always been uneven or has changed. An overhead close-up can show missing filler while hiding a step between the two pieces.

Filling is different from alignment

Replacing deteriorated joint material does not automatically bring two misaligned pieces into the same plane. Cabinet position, support and installation access can affect what is practical. The written scope should identify whether the job is limited to joint preparation and refill or includes other agreed work. Do not assume grinding the surrounding top is a suitable answer for every material.

Material and finish limits

Engineered stone should not be promised a return to its original factory sheen after sanding. Natural-stone restoration also depends on the actual material and finish. If an uneven waterfall connection is unsafe or unsuitable, replacement may be recommended. Repair planning must consider the installation and the likely appearance, not only the width of the visible line.

Useful quote details

Include the suburb, material name if known, full-bench photographs and any relevant installation history. Mention appliances, plumbing or fixed fittings that restrict access. Joint repairs start from $550 + GST ($605 total), subject to the scope; alignment, support or replacement work is not automatically included. Ask what will change and what difference will remain after the proposed work.

Questions, answered.
