Repairing stone versus installing a new benchtop

Start with your goal: reduce a small damaged area, address a failing installation or change the kitchen. Each points to a different scope.

When repair is worth assessing

A local edge chip or suitable failed joint may be addressed without replacing the whole surface. Material, support and the expected visible result still need review. A repair quote should state which damage is included.

When replacement may fit better

Large missing sections, long cracks, unstable stone and major layout changes may justify replacement. Filling a former sink opening is not the same as having continuous new stone. Matching a replacement piece to older adjacent material also deserves discussion.

Compare complete proposals

Include removal, access, cabinet condition, cutouts, plumbing and electrical coordination when pricing replacement. StoneCountertops handles new supply and installation planning; StoneRepair assesses the existing damage.

Compare the result you will live with

A visible but tidy repair may suit a sound existing kitchen. If the goal is a different colour, a new layout or an uninterrupted finish, replacement may better address the actual brief. Discuss matching adjacent pieces, splashbacks and waterfalls so a partial replacement is not assumed to look identical to aged stone.

Keep the decision evidence-based

Ask what can be repaired, what remains visible and whether supporting work is needed. For replacement, request the material, edge, cutouts, removal and installation scope. Compare the total project and disruption, rather than deciding only from the minimum price of one repair or the slab price of a replacement.
